Yes, it’s a class. No, it’s not like school. It’s a room full of writers learning their craft. Fiction or nonfiction: finding your voice, telling the story, whatever kind of writing you do, you’ll be doing it better by the end of the term. Writing: A Column, Guest Commentary,

  Letter to the Editor

Learn how to write for newspaper editorial pages in a three-part workshop presented by long time Chinook Observer newspaper columnist Victoria Stoppiello. The classic personal essay is a mix of personal observation and factual information, passionate or dispassionate depending on the writer. Students will develop “commentaries” for potential publication and need to bring a notebook or journal and writing implement.

Stained Glass

Add some color to your life and learn how to make your own Tiffany Style stained glass. Each student will be able to create two copper foil stained glass projects in this studio style class. Provided for use at class are: safety eye glasses, grinders, glass saws, breaking pliers, copper foiling tools and wooden trays as well as storage for your projects. A portion of the fee ($20) is a studio fee and is non-refundable after the first day of class (A steel wheel glass cutter and some practice glass are included.). The only materials you will be asked to provide is stained glass, copper foil and solder for your projects. There will be a wide variety of materials available at reasonable prices from instructor. This class is for beginners or those continuing from the Spring Term class.

Writing press releases about your activity that read like news articles can be the best source of free advertising for your company or organization while providing the public with thorough information about your product, services or  event. This class will teach simple approaches that will save your time (and your newspaper editor's), including "covering the basics," pyramidal style, creating useful "boilerplate," including photos, and compiling a relevant media list.

Spanish for Beginners

AARP Driver Safety Program

The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Driver Safety Program teaches preventive driving measures that save lives. You must be at least 50 years old to take this course. Cost is $12 for AARP members; $14 for nonmembers. Payment of $12 will be taken when you register. If you are an AARP member, bring your AARP membership card to class. Non-members bring $2.

Introduction to Excel

For individuals beginning to use spreadsheets with Microsoft Excel or similar software. Class participants should be familiar with using a keyboard, mouse, and Windows. (Access to a computer with Excel installed at home or at work is advisable so lessons learned can be practiced in the real world.) Items covered in early classes will be visited again in later classes, and practice time will be allowed with prepared examples.

Living Better With Diabetes

This course provides information to the newly diagnosed or long term diabetic on the signs and symptoms and the physiological changes that occur, diet and nutrition, medications, and life-style changes to live better with diabetes. Hatha Yoga: Tolovana Hall.  Instructor: Christen Allsop

All levels Vinyasa Flow: Begins 5 October: Mondays: 8:00-9:15am & 9:30-10:45am; Wednesdays: 8:00-9:15am; Fridays: 9:30-10:45am; Saturdays: 9:30-10:45am 

Vinyasa is a vigorous, dynamic style that links breath and movement through a heat building sequence of postures.  This class is designed to build strength, stamina and flexibility while maintaining precise alignment and technique.  Recommended for students with some yoga experience.  Please bring mat.

Beginning Chair Yoga: Wednesdays 9:30-10:30am. Begins 7 October: 4 weeks $35; drop-in $10.

This gentle yoga class is practiced while seated or supported by a chair.  The adapted Hatha Yoga postures are designed to build strength and flexibility and improve circulation through movement that is linked with the breath.  Recommended for beginners, those new to yoga or those nursing an injury or illness.  Please bring a mat.

Zen Lifestyles: Mondays 6-8pm Tolovana Hall. Begins 12 October: 8 weeks $70. Instructor: Wm. Eldridge, PhD.

An interactive, group process experience that involves learning and practicing the basic principles of relaxed thinking, mindful attention, emotional vibrancy, behavioral flexibility, soulful creativity and spiritual harmony and peace.  The class includes meditation, spontaneous movement and dance, free-form art and writing, open-ended conversation and narration, and lots of laughter, fun and joyous relationship building.  Although the theory evolved from early Japanese Buddhism, Chinese Taoism and Christian Mysticism, the class is non-religious in nature and focuses on the fundamental dynamics of compassion, freedom, creativity, happiness, community building and love.  Instructor: 503.436.0766

Yogic Breathing and Meditation: Thursdays 11:00am-Noon: Tolovana Hall.  Beginning 8 October: 4 weeks $35, drop-in $10.  Instructors: Lucy & Daryl Eigen.

Explore the roots of yoga through breathwork, mantra, focused contemplation and various forms of meditation.  Deepen your knowledge of yoga and how it can become a part of your daily life, on and off the mat.  The results are calmness of mind, a sense of well-being and deeper mental clarity.  All are welcome.

 

Anusara Yoga: Thursdays 6-7:30pm: Tolovana Hall. Beginning 8 October: 4 weeks $35; drop-in $10.  Instructor: Jennifer Myers.

Anusara (“in the flow of grace”) yoga is a heart-centered approach that also stresses alignment.  Level l and 2 will focus on sun salutations, standing poses and beginning inversions.   Some yoga experience recommended, call for information.  Instructor: 503.436.9567.

 

Being a Writer: Thursdays 6-8pm: CB History Center.  Beginning 8 October: 8 weeks $70, drop-in $10.  Instructor: Michael Burgess.

Develop the skills and habits necessary to good writing.  Weekly exercises focus on aspects of story, character and voice.  Everyone writes, everyone reads, everyone talks, the instructor edits your work with compassion but no mercy.  Supportive atmosphere, constructive feedback and a weekly deadline   Whatever sort of writing you do, you’ll be doing it better by the end of the term.  Come prepared to laugh.   Instructor: 503.436.2868.

 

Recorder for Children: Saturdays 10:30am-Noon: Cannon Beach Children’s Center.  Beginning 10 October: 4 weeks $60.  Instructor: Lorain Tryzna.

The recorder is a simple instrument to learn to play.  Even if you know virtually nothing about music, you will learn to play songs.  The class is designed for beginners but all are welcome to experience making music.  There will be a short recital at the end of the session.  Recorders and music provided.  Please call to register by 3 October.  Instructor: 503.436.2296.

This non-techie workshop will help you learn basic functions of your digital.  Take better photos, feel more confident and comfortable with your camera.  Parts and modes, basic composition and lighting technique.  Bring your camera, your questions and the manual if you have one.  Instructor: 503.739.6190.

 

Encaustic Wax Painting: Saturday, 7 November, 1-3pm: Tolovana Hall (Instructor: Susan Simon) $50

Discover the mystery of what lies just beneath a translucent surface.  Using pigments, melted wax and a blowtorch, students create their own magic.  Encaustic painting is a 2,000 year old process developed by the Egyptians and practiced by many current artists.

Instructors

 

 

Christen Allsop has studied and practiced yoga for twenty years and has taught for the past ten.  Her practice is influenced by lyengar yoga and Vinyasa Flow.

 

Michael Burgess is an author, columnist and award-winning journalist who also teaches writing at Tillamook Bay Community College.

 

Daryl Karunakar Eigen, Ph.D., RYT-500 and Lucy Jeevani Eigen, MA, RYT-500 bring a combined 25 years of training, study and teaching to their enthusiastic classes and workshops.  They have studied classical yoga extensively in the U.S., Asia and India with master yogis and senior teachers.  Lucy is also an advanced certified craniosacral therapist and Daryl is a volunteer teacher for Living Yoga in Portland.

 

David Kinhan studied painting and art history at PSU.  His work has been exhibited many times, most recently at the Cannon Beach Arts Association Gallery.

 

Jennifer Myers, an Oregon Coast native, was introduced to yoga in 1987 at Portland State University and completed a year-long anusara yoga teacher training with Sarahjoy Marsh in 2004.  She has been teaching yoga for ten years.

 

Susan Simon has studied at Oregon School of Arts and Crafts and Pacific NW College of Art, exhibited at the Whitebird Gallery and Cannon Beach Arts Association, and taught at Clatsop Community College.  She has practiced encaustic painting for eight years.

 

Alisha Smith began her career in 1998, conducting group fitness classes and providing personal fitness training.  Over the past ten years, she has held several fitness certifications including Apex, Nautilus and the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

 

Melissa Thornton has a degree in International Studies and has lived in Mexico.

 

Lorain Trzyna has a degree in music education (choral and instrumental) from Illinois State and performed graduate work at Cardinal Stritch University.  She has taught general music, piano and voice since 1989.

 

Glynis Valenti is a commercial photographer with a degree in communications/journalism.  She has taught for parks & recreation programs and the juvenile justice system.

Spiritual Writing
Instructor:   Gail Balden is a writer, educator and workshop presenter with over 30 years of teaching experience. Her work has been published in anthologies, literary journals and national magazines. Do it for yourself, do it for your family, do it for the world.

Description:   Soulcollage is a wonderful process of working with images in such a way that we can each tap into our inner wisdom. Developed by Seena Frost (www.soulcollage.com). it takes no artistic training or experience and yet each card made is a work of art. Kathryn trained in CA directly with Seena and uses soulcollage in her personal life and in her work as a clinical social worker in private practice.
